There are plenty of guys who know more about good shoes than me. I don't pretend to know a ton about shoes so instead of recommending specifics I'd say you should search the subreddit for wingtips, dress shoes, oxford shoes, etc. If you've got a bigger wallet Brooks Brothers makes a damn good shirt, especially if you can go to one of their stores, and I've always had a soft sport for Calvin Klein dress shirts. If you wear a belt, make sure the color matches your shoes.īrands: I don't have experience with their dress shirts, but Uniqlo's have been spoken of favorably here, as well as their ties (just $13 for a serviceable tie is great for college). Wingtips/brogues are a pretty standard go-to if it's not a super formal occasion, and they'll be more versatile with other non-suit outfits, but personally I don't think you can beat a clean black dress shoe for formality. Shoes: Brown is typically more casual and black more formal, but don't think you can't look professional in brown shoes. Orange is the strongest complementary color to blue and looks very striking, but it'll turn some heads and may not be right depending on the situation. Navy, bold red, gold (and patterns of any of those), and bold stripes are all great with a white shirt and most blues. Tie: It's more personal preference within a certain palette.
Just get a cheap pack of Hanes or Fruit of the Loom if you don't have them already. Wear a white undershirt as well, the neck type doesn't really matter but crew will be less visible for a dress shirt.
After that you can experiment with some thin pinstriping (blue on white), solid light blue, or finely patterned white, but navy and clean white is a strong classic look. Pics/link would help, I'm assuming flat navy not pinstriped?
